What is the background to the introduction?
Japan Internet Exchange Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as JPIX) operates an "IX (Internet Exchange) service business" that provides a platform where domestic ISPs (Internet Service Providers) can exchange traffic with each other.
The service boasts one of the largest volumes of traffic and connected users in Japan. JPIX commissioned NTT Advanced Technology Corporation (hereinafter: NTT-AT) to develop the "NSW-QAI" optical switch, which was introduced in 2009. This switch is said to be contributing to improved efficiency and reliability in core network maintenance.
We spoke with Mr. Yoshiki Ishida, then President and CEO of the company, about the process from considering its introduction to its development and operation.
